Referee Fees

Referees in the Northern California RFU Referee Society are not paid for their services.  They are giving their time and effort for the love of the Game.  Referees can request reimbursement from the Society for their incurred travel expenses.

Northern California teams are each charged a $30 per game referee fee.  For games with teams from outside of California, the home team is charged $60 per game.  Clubs are billed in December for the coming season and fees are due at that time.  If the Society does not provide referees for all matches paid, the Club receives a refund.  Clubs with overdue fees will not be provided referees.

Referees can request $25 per game or actual expenses, which ever is greater.  Use of personal car for travel is reimbursable at $.14 (fourteen cents) per mile.  Almost all referees donate their expense fees to the Society.  The Society uses the fees received from the clubs for courses, clinics, meetings, exchanges, educational material, etc.

Before incurring large expenditures, such as airfares, Society Board of Director approval is required.

Referee Pricing for Tournaments

The charge for referee services at Tournaments is as follows:

Guideline

No two tournaments are the same. Number of games, length of games, all vary. Where there is an eight team tournament, referee charges will be equal to the entry fee of one team. At present this is the upper limit, the maximum charge. So a twelve team tournament's charge is also equal to one teams entry fee. Your honesty is implicit here. We trust you! If a tournament had less than eight teams, say six teams, the charge will be pro rata (e.g. 75% of a teams entry fee). A four team tournament would attract a charge of 50% of a team's entry fee. These charges can be adjusted at the discretion of the referee society, for extenuating circumstances.

Delinquent Club Fees

The Society's position, which the Northern California Rugby Union supports, is that any home team which is delinquent on their fees forfeits the match. If we have a referee available we may cover the match, for the benefit of the visiting team, but the home team will be reported as the loser of the match regardless of the outcome. If your club is in arrears with the Referees Society, any games that are played, are subject to forfeit even if you win the game. This may harm your chances of advancing in this season's championships.
